The hostel was built in 1976, in the memory of Smt. Rani Meyyammai, wife of Philanthropist Padma Bhushan Dr.Rajah Sir M. A Muthiah Chettiar.
Smt. Sigapi Ramasamy, fondly addressed as Achi by everyone, played a key role in the development of the hostel right from the days of laying the foundation stone.

Foundation stone in campus:
“Rani Meyyammai Hostel foundation laid by Thirumathi Indira Gandhi (Former) Prime Minister of India. In the immediate presence Thiru K. K. Shah (Former) Governor of Tamil Nadu and President of Tamil Nadu Educational Trust. Dr.M. Karunanidhi (Former) Chief Minister Tamil Nadu presided. Thursday the 20th September 1973”.

Inauguration Key stone in campus:
“Rani Meyyammai Hostel opened by His Excellency Shri Shankar Dikshit (Former) Governor of Karnataka. His Excellency Shri K. K. Shah (Former) Governor of Tamil Nadu presided. 2-2-1976”.
At the request of Mrs. Madhuben Shah, W/o. Shri K. K Shah, former Governor of Tamil Nadu, Philanthropist Padma Bhushan Dr. Rajah Sir M. A Muthiah Chettiar donated the corpus to build the hostel.
